1. Introduction

Turning Point Leeds (TPL) is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within our community. We strive to create a respectful and supportive environment where all individuals feel valued and empowered to achieve their full potential. This includes pupils, staff, parents/carers, and visitors, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion or belief, age, or any other protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

2. Principles

  • Equality: We treat all individuals fairly and with respect, ensuring equal opportunities across our provision.

  • Diversity: We celebrate and embrace the diversity of our community, recognising the unique contributions and experiences of every individual.

  • Inclusion: We create an inclusive environment where diversity is valued, where barriers to participation are removed, and where all members feel they belong.

3. Responsibilities

  • Directors of TPL: Responsible for championing equality and diversity, ensuring all policies and practices promote fairness and prevent discrimination.

  • Staff: Expected to uphold the principles of equality and non-discrimination in interactions with pupils, colleagues, parents/carers, and visitors. Staff will also challenge any discriminatory behaviour they observe.

  • Pupils: Encouraged to respect and celebrate diversity, treat others with dignity and kindness, and report any instances of discrimination or unfair treatment.

4. Implementation

  • Policy awareness: This policy will be communicated to all staff, pupils, parents/carers, and stakeholders to promote awareness of rights and responsibilities.

  • Training and development: Regular training for staff will cover equality, diversity, unconscious bias, and inclusive practices to strengthen awareness and application in daily practice.

5. Promoting Equality

  • Recruitment and selection: Recruitment processes will be fair, transparent, and free from discrimination, focusing on skills and merit.

  • Sessions and learning: Equality and diversity will be embedded into the lessons, including PSHCE and enrichment activities, to promote respect and understanding of different cultures, histories, and perspectives.

6. Preventing Discrimination

  • Zero tolerance: TPL adopts a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, harassment, bullying, or victimisation based on protected characteristics.

  • Reporting mechanisms: Clear reporting processes are in place for staff and pupils to raise concerns. Incidents will be investigated promptly, and appropriate restorative and disciplinary action will follow.

7. Monitoring and Review

  • Monitoring: Equality and diversity practice will be monitored through pupil voice, staff feedback, and analysis of attendance, progress, and behaviour data to identify any disparities.

  • Review: This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with legal requirements, Leeds City Council expectations, and best practice.

8. External Engagement

  • Partnerships: TPL will work with external organisations, local authorities, and community groups to promote equality, share best practice, and advocate for inclusivity within the wider community.

9. Conclusion

Turning Point Leeds is dedicated to fostering a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. By implementing this policy, we aim to build a supportive and inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and enables all individuals to thrive.
