E-SAFETY

1. Introduction

At Turning Point Leeds (TPL), we recognise the importance of promoting safe and responsible use of technology among pupils, staff, and the wider community. This eSafety Policy outlines our commitment to creating a safe digital environment where everyone can benefit from the opportunities of technology while minimising associated risks.

This policy is underpinned by Keeping Children Safe in Education (2024) and the DfE Voluntary National Standards for Alternative Provision.

2. Aims

  • To ensure all members of the community understand their rights and responsibilities when using digital technologies.

  • To promote safe and responsible online behaviour, including awareness of cyberbullying, online privacy, digital citizenship, and the risks of online radicalisation.

  • To provide clear guidance and procedures for reporting and responding to eSafety incidents.

  • To empower pupils with the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world safely, ethically, and responsibly.

  • To foster a culture of open communication and collaboration between pupils, staff, parents/carers, and external stakeholders.

  • Filtering and monitoring systems are in place to restrict access to harmful content and to identify unsafe usage.

4.2 Personal Devices

  • Pupils are not permitted to use personal devices during the school day. Devices are handed in each morning and stored securely until the end of the day.

  • Personal devices must not disrupt teaching or compromise safety and privacy.

5. Cyberbullying Prevention

  • Cyberbullying of any kind will not be tolerated.

  • All incidents will be taken seriously, investigated promptly, and addressed in line with behaviour and safeguarding policies.

  • Restorative approaches will be used to rebuild relationships where safe and appropriate.

6. Data Protection and Privacy

  • TPL is committed to protecting the privacy and personal data of pupils, staff, and stakeholders in line with GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

  • All digital data handling must comply with TPL’s Data Protection Policy.

7. Incident Reporting and Response

  • All eSafety incidents must be reported to the DSL/Headteacher.

  • Safeguarding-related incidents will be escalated to the host school DSL and, where necessary, to the local authority or external agencies.

  • Responses may include restorative meetings, disciplinary measures, pastoral support, or termination of placement.

8. Education and Training

  • Pupils will receive regular eSafety education through PSHCE and bespoke activities.

  • Staff will receive training on current online risks and safeguarding responsibilities.

  • Parents/carers will be offered workshops and resources to support safe use of technology at home.

  • Pupil voice will be sought in developing and improving eSafety practice.

9. Review and Evaluation

  • This policy will be reviewed annually.

  • TPL will monitor incidents and stakeholder feedback to adapt provision to new risks and trends.

10. Policy Dissemination

  • This policy will be shared via the website, induction packs, and staff training.

  • Regular reminders will reinforce awareness and good practice.

11. Conclusion

The eSafety Policy reflects TPL’s commitment to safeguarding pupils and staff in the digital environment. Through clear guidance, restorative practice, and open communication, we aim to equip our pupils to use technology confidently, responsibly, and safely.
