1. Introduction

At Turning Point Leeds (TPL), we recognise the importance of promoting safe and responsible use of technology among our pupils, staff, and wider community. This eSafety Policy outlines our commitment to creating a safe digital environment where everyone can benefit from the opportunities offered by technology while minimising the risks associated with its use.

eSafety forms a key part of our safeguarding framework and is aligned with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE), the Prevent Duty, and TPL’s Child Protection Policy.

2. Aims

  • Ensure that all members of the community understand their rights and responsibilities when using digital technologies.

  • Promote safe and responsible behaviour online, including awareness of cyberbullying, online privacy, and digital citizenship.

  • Provide clear guidance and procedures for responding to eSafety incidents and concerns.

  • Empower pupils with the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world safely, confidently, and ethically.

  • Foster open communication between pupils, staff, parents/carers, and host schools regarding eSafety matters.

3. Responsibilities

3.1 Directors and Headteacher

  • Ensure that robust eSafety policies and procedures are in place, regularly reviewed, and integrated into safeguarding.

  • Provide training and support to staff members on eSafety practice and procedures.

3.2 Staff

  • Model safe and responsible online behaviour.

  • Integrate eSafety education into the curriculum.

  • Promptly report any eSafety concerns or incidents to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or Deputy DSL.

3.3 Pupils

  • Use digital technologies responsibly and in accordance with TPL’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

  • Report any instances of cyberbullying, inappropriate content, or online safety concerns to a trusted adult at TPL.

3.4 Parents/Carers

  • Support their child’s safe use of technology at home.

  • Engage with TPL’s eSafety education initiatives.

  • Communicate concerns about their child’s online activities with staff.

4. Acceptable Use of Technology

4.1 Internet and Network Use

  • All users must adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

  • Access to inappropriate or harmful content is strictly prohibited.

  • Filtering and monitoring systems are in place and regularly reviewed.

4.2 Personal Devices

  • Pupils are not permitted to use personal devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets) during the school day.

  • Devices are handed in each morning and stored securely until the end of the day.

  • Staff will use their phones for professional use only.

5. Cyberbullying Prevention

  • Cyberbullying, including harassment, intimidation, or targeted abuse online, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

  • Pupils are encouraged to report incidents promptly.

  • Staff will investigate and respond using restorative practices where possible, alongside sanctions if required, to educate pupils and repair relationships.

6. Data Protection and Privacy

  • TPL protects the privacy and personal data of pupils, staff, and stakeholders in line with GDPR and our Data Protection Policy.

  • All data handling, including storage, sharing, and disposal, must comply with data protection principles.

7. Incident Reporting and Response

  • Any eSafety concerns should be reported immediately to the DSL

  • TPL will investigate incidents promptly and take proportionate action, which may include:

    • Restorative meetings

    • Counselling or education

    • Disciplinary measures

    • Involvement of external authorities where necessary

  • Termination of placement will only be considered as a last resort where persistent or severe breaches place the safety of others at risk.

8. Education and Training

  • Pupils: Access workshops, lessons, and activities on online privacy, social media use, and digital citizenship.

  • Staff: Receive annual training on eSafety, safeguarding online risks, and reporting responsibilities.

  • Parents/Carers: Are provided with guidance and resources to support safe online use at home.

9. Review and Evaluation

  • This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure effectiveness and relevance.

  • Feedback from pupils, parents/carers, host schools, and staff will inform updates.

10. Policy Dissemination

  • The policy will be shared via the TPL website, staff induction, and parent/carer communications.

  • Regular reminders and refreshers will be provided throughout the year.
