
1. Introduction

1.1. Turning Point Leeds (TPL) is committed to providing a safe environment for all pupils, staff, and visitors. This Fire Safety Policy outlines the procedures and responsibilities for fire prevention, evacuation, and emergency response to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on the premises.
2. Responsibilities
2.1. Leadership Team:

The Leadership Team is responsible for ensuring that effective fire safety measures are in place and that all staff and pupils are familiar with emergency procedures.

They will appoint a designated Fire Safety Officer to oversee fire safety arrangements and conduct regular inspections and drills.
2.2. Fire Safety Officer:

The Fire Safety Officer will be responsible for implementing and maintaining fire safety measures, conducting risk assessments, and providing fire safety training to staff and pupils.

They will ensure that fire detection and alarm systems are tested regularly, emergency evacuation routes are clearly marked, and firefighting equipment is maintained in good working order.
2.3. All Staff:

All staff members have a duty to familiarise themselves with the fire safety procedures and evacuation routes and to respond promptly to fire alarm signals.

They must report any fire hazards or concerns to the Fire Safety Officer and follow safe practices to minimise the risk of fire.
2.4. Pupils:

pupils must follow instructions from staff during fire drills and evacuations, move quickly and calmly to the designated assembly points, and not re-enter the building until given permission by a member of staff.
3. Fire prevention
3.1. TPL will take proactive measures to prevent fires by:

Regularly inspecting and maintaining electrical systems, heating appliances, and other potential ignition sources.

Ensuring that flammable materials are stored safely and that combustible waste is disposed of properly.

Prohibiting smoking inside the buildings
4. Fire detection and alarm systems
4.1. TPL will maintain a reliable fire detection and alarm system to provide early warning of fire incidents.

Fire alarm systems will be tested regularly to ensure that they are in proper working order and that all alarms are audible throughout the premises.

Fire alarm call points and manual call points will be clearly marked and accessible, and staff will be trained on how to operate them in case of emergency.
5. Emergency evacuation procedures
5.1. TPL School will develop and communicate clear emergency evacuation procedures to all staff and students.

Emergency evacuation routes will be clearly marked and kept free from obstructions at all times.

Regular fire drills will be conducted to familiarise staff and pupils with evacuation procedures and to practise orderly evacuation from the premises.
6. Firefighting equipment
6.1. TPL School will provide adequate fire fighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and hose reels, in strategic locations throughout the premises.

Firefighting equipment will be inspected and maintained regularly, and staff will be trained on how to use it effectively in the event of a fire.
7. Emergency contacts
7.1. TPL will maintain a list of emergency contacts, including the fire service, local authorities, and relevant staff members.

Emergency contact information will be prominently displayed throughout the premises and provided to all staff and pupils.
8. Training and awareness
8.1. TPL School will provide fire safety training and awareness-raising activities for all staff and pupils.

Training will cover topics such as fire prevention, emergency evacuation procedures, and the use of firefighting equipment.

Staff and pupils will receive regular updates and reminders on fire safety best practices and procedures.
9. Review and evaluation
9.1. This Fire Safety Policy will be reviewed and evaluated regularly to ensure that it remains effective and compliant with relevant legislation and best practice guidelines.

Feedback from fire drills, inspections, and incident reports will be used to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as necessary.

10. Communication and consultation
10.1. TPL will promote open communication and consultation on fire safety matters among all members of our community.

Staff, pupils, and visitors will be encouraged to raise any fire safety concerns or suggestions for improvement with the Fire Safety Officer or other appropriate staff members.
11. Compliance
11.1. TPL is committed to complying with all relevant fire safety legislation, regulations, and codes of practice, as well as adhering to guidance issued by regulatory authorities and professional bodies.
