Turning Point Leeds (TPL) is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all pupils, staff, visitors, and contractors. This policy sets out the procedures for recognising, responding to, and managing medical emergencies on TPL premises or during school-related activities. Our priority is to provide immediate, professional, and compassionate care while coordinating effectively with emergency services, parents/carers, and host schools.

2. Objectives

Emergency response: Provide timely, effective, and proportionate care in medical emergencies.

Coordination: Ensure seamless communication and collaboration between staff, first aiders, emergency services, parents/carers, and host schools.

Preparedness: Equip staff with the knowledge, skills, and resources required to act confidently in emergencies.

3. Responsibilities
3.1 Directors

Oversee implementation of this policy.

Ensure adequate first aid cover, training, and resources are in place.
3.2 Designated First Aiders
-
Provide immediate first aid within the scope of their training.
-
Record all incidents accurately in the medical logbook.
-
Liaise with emergency services as required.
3.3 All Staff
-
Remain vigilant for signs of medical emergencies.

Summon help immediately and follow the agreed procedures.

Provide reassurance and maintain calm until help arrives.
3.4 Pupils
-
Report any concerns about their own or others’ health promptly.

Follow staff instructions during medical emergencies.
3.5 Parents/Carers
-
Provide up-to-date medical information, including allergies, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, or other significant conditions.

Supply any medication required under a pupil’s individual healthcare plan.

4. Procedures for Dealing with Medical Emergencies
4.1 Immediate Response
-
Ensure the scene is safe before approaching.

Assess the casualty’s responsiveness, airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC).
-
Provide first aid or CPR if trained and appropriate.
-
Call 999 immediately for life-threatening emergencies.
-
Summon a designated first aider and notify the Headteacher without delay.
4.2 Communication
-
Headteacher/Directors must be informed at the earliest opportunity.

Emergency services must be given clear directions and unhindered access to the casualty.
4.3 Coordination with Emergency Services
-
Provide details of the casualty’s medical history (if available), incident circumstances, and first aid already given.
-
A member of staff will accompany the pupil to hospital if parents/carers are unavailable.

5. Notification and Record-Keeping
-
Parents/Carers: Contacted immediately and updated regularly.

Host School: Informed as soon as practicable.
-
Records: Details of the incident, actions taken, and outcomes logged in the Medical Logbook and retained securely.

RIDDOR Reporting: Serious incidents (hospitalisation, specified injuries, or dangerous occurrences) reported to the Health and Safety Executive in line with regulations.

6. Post-Emergency Review

Conduct a debrief with staff involved to review the response.

Offer restorative conversations with pupils to support re-engagement and reduce anxiety.

Update healthcare plans, policies, or risk assessments where needed.

7. Training and Preparedness​
-
A minimum of one trained first aider will be present on site at all times.

Specific training for staff supporting pupils with care plans (e.g., EpiPen, asthma inhalers, diabetes management).

Regular drills and scenario-based exercises to practise emergency procedures.

8. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually by the Directors, or sooner following a serious incident, changes in legislation, or feedback from stakeholders.
