Turning Point Leeds Admissions Policy

1. Introduction

At Turning Point Leeds (TPL), we are dedicated to providing a high-quality education that meets the diverse needs of our pupils and prepares them for success in a rapidly changing world. Our admissions policy outlines the procedures and criteria for admitting pupils, ensuring transparency, fairness, and equal opportunities for all applicants.

2. Number of Places Available

TPL will provide education for 10 Key Stage 3 pupils in Years 7, 8, or 9. These places will be a mix of full-time and part-time.

3. Admissions Criteria

3.1 Age Requirement: Applicants must meet the age requirements specified for each year group. Pupils must be in Year 7, 8, or 9.

3.2 Residency: TPL primarily serves pupils residing within the designated catchment area. However, we also welcome applications from pupils residing outside the catchment area, subject to availability of spaces and meeting other admission criteria.

3.3 Special Educational Needs: TPL is committed to inclusive education and welcomes pupils with special educational needs.

4. Application Process

4.1 Application Form: Host schools are required to complete the TPL application form, providing accurate and up-to-date information about the pupil’s personal details, educational background, and any additional support needs.

4.2 Supporting Documents: Applicants must submit supporting documents including a referral form and an Individual Pupil Risk Assessment.

4.3 Admissions Meetings: Pupils, a representative of the host school, and their parents/carers are invited to attend admissions meetings with TPL staff to discuss the pupil’s needs, aspirations, and compatibility with TPL’s ethos and values.

5. Referral Arrangements for 2024/25

Registration Arrangements: Where pupils are on the roll of another school and attend for a short period, the student will be dual registered at their current school and TPL.

Pupils Supported by TPL:

The school will specialise in providing places for:

- Those who are at risk of permanent exclusion.

- Pupils refusing mainstream school.

- Pupils needing respite from their mainstream school.

Referral Arrangements

To acquire a place at TPL, pupils must be referred by an educational establishment or local authority (commissioners).

Funding

Each full-time equivalent place at TPl is £100 per day or schools can contact the finance team to purchase a reserved place for a year.

7. Oversubscription Criteria

When there are more referrals than places available, the following oversubscription criteria will apply in order of priority:

- Pupils who are or were previously looked after by a Local Authority.

- Pupils who live closest to the school in a straight line. Distance will be measured from the front door of the student’s home to the front gate/door of the school. If pupils live exactly the same distance away from the school, random allocation will be used to determine who will be admitted.

8. Offers

If we can accept a referral, we will inform the host school including financial requirements, the support to be offered, a start date, the date by which the offer should be accepted, and the address to which to respond.

9. Procedure Following an Offer

When offers are made, if the host school fails to accept the place by the date set, it will be assumed that the host school no longer wants the place and the offer will be withdrawn.

10. Appeals Against Refusal to Accept a Referral

The appeals process is detailed in Annex B. Appeals will be considered by an independent panel unconnected to the school.

11. Complaints

Please refer to our complaints policy

12. Equal Opportunities

Turning Point Leeds is committed to equal opportunities and admits pupils across the full spectrum of academic abilities. All pupils have equal access to the curriculum, and there is a learning support program for pupils with special needs.

13. Review

This policy will be reviewed annually. Any amended policy for the following September will be published on the school’s website before the end of the preceding September. The policy will remain on the website throughout the school year.
