
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to set out the training requirements for all staff at Turning Point Leeds (TPL). Training ensures staff have the knowledge and skills needed to provide a safe, supportive, restorative, and effective learning environment for all pupils.

2. Scope
This policy applies to all staff, including permanent, temporary, part-time, volunteers, and contractors working with TPL pupils.

3. Policy Statement
TPL is committed to continuous professional development (CPD). All staff must complete statutory training and engage in role-specific training to ensure compliance with legislation and best practice. Training will reflect Keeping Children Safe in Education (2024), Leeds City Council safeguarding procedures, and the DfE Voluntary National Standards for AP.

4. Training Requirements
A. Induction Training
All new staff must complete induction training within their first month. This includes:

Introduction to TPL ethos, values, and restorative culture.

Safeguarding and child protection (including role of DSL, reporting procedures, Prevent duty, and escalation routes such as LADO).

Health and safety procedures.
-
Staff code of conduct and whistleblowing policy.

TPL Relationships and Behaviour Policy.

B. Safeguarding and Child Protection Training

All staff: Receive safeguarding and child protection training at induction, with updates at least annually, plus interim refreshers throughout the year. Training covers:

Signs and symptoms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and radicalisation.

Reporting and recording procedures.
-
Escalation routes for concerns, including allegations against staff.

Prevent duty awareness.

DSL/Deputy DSL: Complete advanced DSL training every two years, refreshed regularly (at least annually). This includes:

Managing referrals.

Multi-agency working.
-
Record keeping and information sharing.

Legal frameworks and updates.

C. Health and Safety Training

All staff: Annual training covering fire safety, evacuation, first aid awareness, and risk assessment.

Specialist staff: First Aiders, Fire Marshals, and other role-holders receive enhanced training relevant to their duties.

D. Professional Development Training

Teaching staff: Engage in subject-specific training, pedagogy, curriculum updates, inclusive practice, and restorative/trauma-informed approaches.

Support staff: CPD tailored to roles, including SEND support, behaviour management, safeguarding responsibilities, and administrative skills.

E. Specialist Training

SEND training: For staff working with pupils with additional needs.

Mental health awareness: All staff trained to recognise and support mental health needs, with Mental Health First Aid training for nominated staff.

Equality and diversity: Training on the Equality Act 2010, unconscious bias, and inclusive practice.

5. Training Delivery

In-house training led by senior staff or external trainers.

Online accredited training modules.

Workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Joint training with host schools or Leeds City Council where appropriate.

6. Record Keeping

Training records include dates, attendees, provider details, and certificates.

Directors to maintain a central training log.

Records are reviewed termly to ensure compliance and highlight gaps.

7. Compliance and Accountability

Staff: Responsible for completing required training and maintaining professional knowledge.

Directors: Ensure statutory requirements are met, evaluate training impact, and provide resources.

This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if guidance changes.
